10 Designer Tips on How to Decorate a Luxury Dining Table

It's quite natural to be captivated by luxurious dining spaces that have been styled to perfection by interior designers - whether you see these in magazines, on tv or online. Such luxury spaces have their own desirability and with a few simple tips, you too can achieve a similar look for your dining space.

How to Accessorise Your Luxury Dining Table?

How you style and decorate your dining table depends on many factors, including your personal decor preferences, your lifestyle and the overall theme of your dining space.

To learn their secrets, we asked our interior designers about how they have been styling the tables in their latest projects; here's what we found out:

1 - Ensure That You Have Good Lighting Above the Dining Table

A luxury dining space deserves luxury lighting, as it will help your table truly shine.

Our designers usually go for neutral-toned but eye-catching chandeliers that perfectly complement the tables that they have selected.

As an example, you can look at the dining space below that we created for an award-winning project, in partnership with Rina Vastu - for this glass dining table, the designers went for a strategically installed, candle-style glass chandelier.

According to our senior interior designer, Cristina Chirila, "both lighting and luxury dining tables are the kind of items that you do not replace very often. These are the kind of purchases that should last you many decades and often a lifetime. So, it's important to carefully select items that will complement each other and enhance the overall style and colour scheme of the room. Instead of going for trendy items or colours - go for timeless pieces that will never feel outdated."

But what if you do not want to go for a chandelier or if your space is not big enough for one?

"In such scenarios, of course, having a chandelier is not an absolute necessity. You can create equally grand interiors with other types of lighting, such as hanging pendant lights. I would also recommend exploring side lighting through floor lamps if you really want to create an ambience," explains Cristina.

2 - Use a Tray for Dining Tables in the Kitchen

If your dining table is in the kitchen, then it can often be hard to keep it clean, organised and free of any unwanted items.

That is why we recommend placing a tray that you can use to hold such items or any extra kitchenware, such as glasses. You'll find such trays very multifunctional and useful, especially for busy kitchens.

3 - Candles and Small Planters

"This is the simplest way to style up your luxury dining table and yet it continues to be the most effective one," says Ben as we looked through the beautiful pictures from his Bushey project.

The grey dining table in this project was accentuated with small but carefully chosen accessories, all organised in a beautiful decorative tray.

4 - Use Outdoor Lamps & Fresh Plants for Outdoor Dining Tables

Natural greenery is the way to go for luxury outdoor dining tables.

For this outdoor dining space, our designers went with glass candle stands, which you can also swap with lamps, along with two beautiful centrepieces holding fresh plants in water.

Our interior designer, Ricardo, highly recommends playing with geometry when choosing your dining table decor, "for a rectangular dining table, I would go with round centrepieces and vice versa as this creates visual interest."

5 - A Beautiful Vase

The strong contrast between this green vase and our white dining table is what we call decor goals.

According to Ben, "since this was a marble dining table, I loved the idea of going with a marble effect vase. Such subtle similarities in the theme can have a big impact on the overall energy of the room, and adding colour through these accessories really helps bring the space to life."

6 - Create a Focal Point with a Centrepiece

You don't have to limit yourself to vases only. Any idyllic centrepiece that complements your table and interior style can be used to make a statement.

As an example, we would love to share this beautiful gold centrepiece that immediately catches the attention because of the strong contrast.

"Of course, considering the decadent effect of gold, we had to add some of it in this otherwise black and white kitchen and I believe it worked out perfectly for this dining table," says Cristina.

7 - Choosing High-End Materials

Our designers recommend experimenting with different types of high-end materials and textures - as long as they are all good-quality items and work well together.

Below you can see the dining table we used in our Telfords Yard project, where our designers chose a grey velvet runner on the black table.

On the one hand, the grey colour creates a beautiful contrast with black, and on the other, it beautifully matches the grey dining chairs and flooring.

The planters and candles chosen to be placed on the table are also all high-end items that complement the overall style and aesthetics of the space.

"When it comes to artificial planters, the quality is immediately obvious - you don't want poor quality, fake-looking planters to destroy the look of your otherwise gorgeous table. For luxury spaces, quality matters over quantity, so it's okay to use fewer items, but it's never okay to use poor quality ones," explains Cristina. "Remember that you want your dining table and your dinner to be the stars of the show, so keep any upholstery and accessories minimalistic to maintain the sophisticated aesthetics that luxury spaces are known for."

For this project, the exposed brick wall acted as the feature wall, so we added several elements around the room (such as a mirror, armchairs and a sideboard) to complement this industrial look.

8 - Place a Rug Under the Dining Table

If your dining table is placed in an open-plan space, then it would be a good idea to define the area using a rug.

For the Telfords Yard project, our designers went with a rug in a tone that is similar to the flooring to create a luxury island for the table.

Here's our detailed guide on what kinds of rugs are popular these days so you can choose the perfect one.

9 - Add a Sideboard Near the Dining Table with Mirror, Shelving or Artwork

We love how beautiful the dining table and matching sideboard look together at our Redington Road project.

"If you're opting for a modern, art-deco style, you can use artwork, bookshelves and wall units around the sideboard. But for a more contemporary, up-scale look or even for Scandinavian interiors, I would recommend installing a simple mirror above the sideboard. Of course, all the elements, especially the table, sideboard and mirror, should be of the same style or theme. Such feature walls offer both aesthetics and functionality, which is a win-win because our clients almost always want extra storage space in the dining rooms," Cristina adds. "And if you like bright, colourful interiors, then a set-up like this acts as a great canvas for you to display your creativity and artwork - giving the space a unique and personalised ambience."

10 - Accessorise with Tableware and Glassware

If you're styling your luxury dining table for a special meal, opt for a mix of tableware and glassware.

Glass accessories will bring an extra touch of luxe to the table. You can also use trays to hold items like glasses or cutlery and this is especially useful for smaller dining tables.

It is also important for alfresco dining as you can store extra items beforehand instead of having to run indoors to grab them later.

Here are some examples from our projects:

Summing Up

Buying a luxury dining table is usually just the first step in creating a bespoke dining space.

You need to choose comfortable dining chairs, the right lighting and accessories (both on the table and around the room) to create a complete luxury dining experience.
