With a passion for glass, Vittorio Livi founded in 1973 Fiam Italia, a company known for creating furniture pieces and mirrors out of curved glass. Using industrial processes and excellent craftsmanship, the company succeeded in turning a fragile material into furniture items. The founder’s fascination for glass started at a very young age. Glass displayed many contradictions that he loved. Apart from practical qualities, it is both natural and artificial, both solid and fragile, hygienic, and environment-friendly. For all its simplicity, glass is complex in terms of chemistry and physics, making it a material of vast potentials.

Combined with the skills and experience of craftsmen, Fiam Italia’s dream of creating furniture pieces that are solid yet transparent and would rise above the production age took shape. Craftsmen are responsible for bending, carving, decorating, engraving, fusing, grinding, and silver-coating, while glassworking professionals control, find, quantify, and predict the right alternatives.

Innovation in design happens because of research, which the company invests in heavily. This also extends to finding technology that can be used to improve production processes, especially because industrially produced glass arrives at the factory in sheets that have to be worked extensively.

Over the years, Fiam Italia has changed its bending furnace from the natural gas-fired equipment to one that is oil-fired. They also have an electricity-powered furnace that offers better temperature control. Insulation has also changed from refractory bricks to high-tech ceramic insulating tiles.

Today, Fiam Italia has glass bending plants that have reached the seventh generation. With ground-breaking technologies to support master glass craftsman, the company continues to supply the world beautiful masterpieces made from the peerless material.
