Can You Put Fitted Wardrobes on Carpet?

One of the first questions we receive from homeowners with carpeted floors is, can you put fitted wardrobes on carpets?

The simple answer is, yes, you can put fitted wardrobes on the carpet - it just takes a bit of extra work, preparation and maintenance.

One of the questions asked most frequently by those investing in new custom cabinetry is: Can you put fitted wardrobes on a carpet? The bottom-line answer is yes you can but it does take a bit of extra work, preparation and maintenance.

Fitted wardrobes are a great addition to any bedroom, providing a stylish, space-saving storage solution that will keep your home clutter-free.

However, whether or not to install them on a carpet is a common dilemma often discussed between homeowners and designers alike.

While it is certainly a possible option, it’s best to explore the benefits and drawbacks before making a final decision. Additionally, certain factors will have to be taken into consideration to ensure that the integrity of your cabinetry isn’t compromised. These include things like the height of the existing carpet pile and whether or not your floor is perfectly level.

The pros of installing a fitted wardrobe on a carpet

There are some good reasons for fitting a wardrobe on top of a carpet. Here they are:

  • Carpets provide a soft, warm surface beneath your feet, contributing to the overall comfort of your bedroom.
  • Visually impactful, they add a sense of style and sophistication to your aesthetics.
  • They help to minimise noise and echo and dampen the sound made by opening and closing your wardrobe doors, ensuring a more tranquil environment.
  • They protect your flooring from scratches and scuffs that are caused by constant contact with your furniture, especially if it is frequently moved around.

The cons of fitting a wardrobe over a carpet

Give these disadvantages some thought before you decide:

  • Over time, the weight of your fitted wardrobe will cause indentations and depressions in the carpet pile, which will leave it looking damaged.
  • With wardrobes in place, carpet maintenance, such as vacuuming and spot cleaning, might be more difficult.
  • If your carpet pile is too thick or your flooring is uneven, it may cause your wardrobe to warp.
  • There will be considerable effort needed should your carpets get permanently stained or damaged and you decide to remove or replace them.
  • Fitting a wardrobe over a carpet is a more expensive process, so if your budget is limited, it may not be a viable option.

Things to consider before fitting your wardrobe

If you’re wondering whether you need protection between your carpet and the wardrobe, here are some tips:

  • Installing built-in wardrobes directly on top of floors covered with a thin carpet without an underlay is a fairly easy process. Make sure, however, that its surface is firm and even.
  • Thick, woven or tufted carpets will require floor liners. These are placed between the carpet and the base and are fixed in place by screwing them into the underlying floor. Your new wardrobe will then be secured on top of the liner.
  • Make sure that your floor is level before installation takes place. Failure to do so could result in badly fitted cabinetry which may eventually distort.
  • If you have opted for sliding doors, we recommend that the installation team remove the section of carpet directly beneath the tracks to facilitate easy motion.
  • Gripper rods will then be fixed to the area leaving a 5 mm gap that will allow for the carpet edge to be tucked in. This will make room for the door track to be screwed in place.

Are there any risks involved when fitting a wardrobe over a carpet?

When built-in wardrobes are fitted over a carpet that has a thick pile, they can shift over time. Although this may only be by a couple of millimeters, it can seriously affect both its appearance and alignment.

Should this happen, you will notice a gap forming between the top of your wardrobe and the ceiling. This may lead to small misalignments that could cause racks, drawers and rails to slant and potentially malfunction.

However, if properly installed over a floor liner, you shouldn’t have any problems.

We suggest that, if you decide to go this route, a section of carpet be removed in order to allow sliding door tracks to be installed directly into the floor.

Alternatively, you could roll a full section of your existing carpet back during the installation process, and then refit it to neatly accommodate the new cabinetry.

Going with either of the above methods will obviously mean that the area will have to be recarpeted should you ever decide to do away with your wardrobe.

Because of the extra work involved, installing a wardrobe over a carpet is a more expensive process, so make sure you adjust your budget accordingly.

Whatever route you choose to go, it’s important to employ a professional cabinet maker as this is a job that must be done properly.

The benefits of keeping your wardrobe clean and well-maintained

Whether you have a walk-in wardrobe like the Scenario by Jesse or opted for sleek corner cabinetry like Design #30 by Logo, keeping it clean is crucial. This is why:

  • It boosts the overall appearance of your bedroom, producing a more attractive environment.
  • A well-maintained fitted wardrobe will last longer, saving you on replacements and repairs in the long run.
  • All of its working parts like doors and drawers will operate more smoothly if they are free from dust.
  • Not only is a clean, uncluttered wardrobe easier to organise, but it will stop your clothes, shoes and accessories from becoming damaged or tatty.
  • Checking it habitually will alert you of any damp buildup which could cause mould and mildew to form.
  • Regular cleaning removes allergens and dust mites, resulting in a healthier indoor environment. This is especially helpful if you suffer from respiratory problems.
  • Keeping all of your furniture installations spotless will maintain the value of your home, making it an attractive prospect for potential buyers should you decide to sell.
