Fashion Meets Interior Design

“Every great design begins with an even better story.” – Lorinda Mamo

There’s a synergy between design and fashion that’s explosive, and with great style icons like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren now delving into décor, the line between the two disciplines is becoming rather blurred. Did you know, for example, that Diesel has recently collaborated with a ceramic tile company? Or that punk-inspired Jun Takahashi produced a cool little light called “Gilapple”? Or that Bvlgari now has a string of luxury resorts?

If you’re a keen fashionista who adores shows like Project Runway, these revelations might be ringing a bell. Because even with young designers, it’s becoming common practice to encourage them to create inspired haute couture out of things like recyclables and building materials. From our perspective, that’s absolutely fabulous, because design is our industry and our passion, and to see it expand and connect with other artistic realms is super exciting. So we’ve dug a little deeper to bring you an exclusive look at all the latest ways in which fashion meets interior design.

What is the difference between fashion and design?

This is actually a bit of a conundrum. Fashion, in the loosest sense of the word, is all about whatever constitutes “the latest craze”. But ponder on the topic a little more and you’ll realise that to create fashion, you must first design it. And design involves so much more than a simple trend. It’s about invention, construction, materials, quality and, ultimately, longevity. It’s represented by the little black dress that’s always in vogue or great décor movements that endure and become classics. Ultimately, it’s about timeless structure that lasts a lifetime. So the bottom line is that design itself transcends fashion and, conversely, fashion encompasses design. And both of them intersect through trends.

Fashion, interior design and psychology

Our environments have a significant influence on how we view ourselves and experience the world. Winston Churchill once said, “We shape our dwellings and afterwards our dwellings shape us.” And it’s true. There’s a definite emotional connection between how we create our home environments, what we wear and how we feel. If we look good or surround ourselves with beautiful things, we bloom internally. Fashion makes us feel confident, empowered and validated. And coming home to a peaceful, immaculately designed home does the same. So both the fashion and interior design industries have a great influence on our psychology and wellbeing, and that’s why we’re obsessed with them.

A glimpse into fashion and design trends in 2022

As we tentatively re-emerge from a two year lockdown period, fashion is teetering between home lounge-wear and party mode. Like décor, clothes are being glammed up a bit while still lingering on the side of comfortable. Let’s take a look at 3 fabulous trends featured on both the couture catwalks and in all the most esteemed interior design catalogues of 2022.

The catsuit

Yes, it’s back! Think along the lines of your favourite onesie or yoga outfit getting an elegant upgrade. The catsuit trend is perfect for hitting the town or reclining with friends in your new work-from-home living space.

Florals

Geometric patterns, florals and pastels are in big-time and favourite fashion Pantone colours this year are Rose Quartz and Serenity. This mirrors home interiors that are infused with organic textiles in tones of emerald-green, rose, cobalt blue and shades of terracotta and caramel. Dress up your garments with some bling in the form of a shiny chain belt worn just across the navel. If in doubt, have a look at Chanel – they’re at the top of their game right now with this popular accessory.

The Kimono

As Asiatic influences bring a sense of zen and simplicity to our current complex world, this timeless, deeply cultural dress form is making a comeback in 2022. It coincides with interior design’s Japandi movement – an all-the-rage style that is a seamless fusion between Japanese and Scandinavian traditions.
