8 Trends in Cabinet Colours

Trends in cabinet colours

2022 is seeing some exciting new shifts in the interiors industry, with kitchens becoming a dynamic focal point. And it stands to reason. Because if the past few years have taught us one thing, it’s that connecting with family and friends on a soul level is what matters the most. There’s no better place to do this than around a central island in the heart of the home.

With over three decades in the design industry and a wealth of experience conceptualising, building and installing bespoke joinery, FCI London is at the forefront of leading trends. So if you’re about to refurbish your kitchen and are looking at installing some sterling cabinetry, here are our design team’s observations on which colours are trending in the fitted furniture industry this year.

1. White cabinets are still popular, especially when mixed with other colours to create a more unique look

White, an ever-popular choice, is still very much in the mix. And while we give it a 35% chance of being selected by pro designers, it’s worth bearing in mind that combining it with natural wood finishes or accent colours is a more likely outcome.

“White is a staple. Not only does it bounce light beautifully, but it helps to brighten up more sombre tones. So use it in your cabinetry against a refined navy, calming sage green or a wooden countertop” advises Christina Chirila, one of our top kitchen specialists. “The trick is to stay away from an all-white theme and focus more on well-conceptualised colour schemes that tick all your client’s boxes”.

2. Darker cabinets are gaining popularity, especially in kitchens with a lot of natural light

“Natural light plays a vital role in a kitchen’s colour palette”, says Christina. “It’s one of the first things we look at because if you have a large, bright space, pastel shades will get lost or look washed out”.

Our statistics show that 50% of our designers are likely to choose black or dark cabinetry this year. We all know that black works with everything, creates drama and blends in seamlessly with quality quartz or even reclaimed wooden countertops, so it’s a fundamental that’s likely to reign supreme well into the future.

3. Wood cabinets are in the limelight with a focus on new variations

With a strong emphasis on sustainability and biophilia in 2022, wooden cabinets are having a hot moment. We’re seeing around 70% of our designers beginning to branch out and play with different types of wood and their unique grains, colours and tones.

“The public is taking a greater interest in properly maintained forestry practices and are demanding a more eco-friendly approach from industry professionals” explains Christina.

And with its ability to blend in with just about the entire colour wheel, bringing warmth and homeliness to any aesthetic, it resonates with the sentiment that every kitchen contributes to a household.

4. Green is becoming a winner and looks to be a trend that will stick around for the next few years

In keeping with 2022’s official colour palette and the biophilic movement, earthy greens are on the rise and are looking to be one of the most popular choices in years to come, say 65% of designers in our network. So from rich olives to gentle sage or crisp mint, it’s definitely one to look out for.

“A colour of calm, it can be both striking and luxurious and goes perfectly with blues, yellows, neutral shades, natural woods, marbled countertops and copper finishes. I believe it’s one of the easiest colours to incorporate into a kitchen, no matter its size”, is Christina’s enthusiastic opinion.

5. Oceanic blues are continuing to be a stable contender for kitchen cabinets

Although shades of blue have fluctuated in popularity over the past years, oceanic tones still hold a 20% share in what’s in vogue this year.

“The drive to connect with the natural world has seen an incline since the outbreak of Covid-19, meaning that colours reflective of our skies and seas are still in the running”, explains Christina. “Being cooped up indoors has been a mental strain on many, so anything that adds a touch of tranquillity is definitely a go-to”.

Giving your aesthetics a French touch, baby blue and ice blue balance perfectly with organic materials like wood or marble. But don’t rule out the navy’s either just yet because they fit into the dark cabinetry category and still have their place.

6. Two-tone combinations are giving modern kitchen cabinetry an edge

While it may not be colour-specific, two-toned cabinetry is an enticing choice for around 40% of our designers, adding depth and interest to your overall aesthetics.

The selection of colours depends on several factors including your client’s preferences, the mood you’re trying to achieve, what blends in best with the rest of your home, and the existing materials of your counters and shelving.

“From quirky combinations like yellow and blue to refined mixes of charcoal grey and soft white, the world is your oyster here”, says Christina. “It’s one of the trends that give us designers a whole lot of creative license and a chance to be playful.”

7. Glass cabinet doors are becoming more popular because they let you show off your crockery

Glass-front cabinets are more of an essential element than a fashion statement in modern kitchen design and a good 25% of our designers will suggest this option to clients in the planning phase of any kitchen.

We’re not implying that you should include them throughout, but a top row of glass panelled cabinets and a bottom set in an accent colour is a worthwhile consideration.

“Glass-fronted cabinetry creates depth and airiness and offers a reflective interest to your theme. It gives you an opportunity to show off designer crockery, sparkling crystal and even decorative elements like vases or cookbooks”, comments Christina.

8. Earthy hues such as beige, cream, sand and almond are versatile neutrals that bring a sense of harmony to any kitchen

This may make you blink twice, but don’t rule out the genius that is beige because any self-respecting interior designer will certainly be on board with the Scandi and Japandi trends.

“A beautiful layering of neutral shades brings about a softness and calm that is synonymous with these ever-popular styles and goes seamlessly with light hardwood flooring, giving you an overall sense of that all-important hygge”, is Christina’s opinion on the concept.

40% of our designers will suggest a Scandinavian approach to their clients when guiding their choices in a specific style.

9. Other kitchen design elements that are on trend in 2022

“When it comes to kitchen décor, it’s not just about the colour. Matte finishes are becoming more popular than glossy ones, statement lighting is a definite must-have and texture is key”, is the resounding opinion from the FCI London team.

Open shelving, fashion-forward stovetop hoods, eclectic mixes of vintage and contemporary styles, bespoke flooring, stone countertops and bringing in natural elements like plants and fruit bowls are all things that should be considered in your initial design.

In Conclusion

Finding the perfect colour for your kitchen cabinets boils down to personal preference, but if you follow the trends, think out of the box and focus on palettes that enhance your space and take the light and layout of the room into consideration, making the right choice should be a cinch.

At FCI London, our designers have their fingers on the pulse when it comes to all the latest trends, so give us a call today and let’s plan the future of your kitchen together.
