Most of us are aware that dampness and mould exists in our homes and that it can be easily removed with common household items like bleach or vinegar. However, one of the questions we get asked most frequently is: How do I stop mould behind my fitted wardrobe?

And rightly so, because it is a far more tricky issue.

If you’ve noticed unattractive stains or musty odours emanating from behind your closet, it’s guaranteed that you have a mildew or mould problem. While fairly common, leaving it untreated can have an impact on the air quality and aesthetics of your room and may even be of detriment to your clothing.

But don’t worry! Our expert team is here to explain what causes it, explore preventative measures and guide you through ways to remove it effectively. Read on if you’re keen to create a healthy, visually pleasing, mould-free environment.

What causes mould in fitted wardrobes?

Fitted wardrobes are highly susceptible to dampness, allowing mould to form if any spores are present in the air around them. And, as airflow behind these structures is almost completely inhibited because they are fastened to the walls, floors and ceilings, this could negatively impact your space.

As with any fitted furniture, accessing the trouble spots can be challenging and finding the source of moisture should always be your top priority. This will enable you to identify the ideal treatment and approach needed, allowing you to protect your wardrobe and its contents.

The formation of mould and mildew typically develops when excessive damp collects in one place, and this could be because of two main reasons:

  • Hanging wet clothes in your wardrobe: After we’ve completed the laborious task of washing, many of us are tempted to hang our "almost dry" garments in our wardrobe. And, while this may seem like a good idea and is said to help reduce creases, it does eventually lead to a moisture problem. This, along with the lack of light in a closet, results in the excess moisture that encourages mould to grow.
  • Condensation: When you install a built-in wardrobe against a wall, the space behind it is hidden from the rest of the room, thereby inhibiting airflow to the area. If these enclosed spaces are then slightly heated without adequate ventilation, they can become humid, making them an ideal environment for mould growth. This circumstance is especially prevalent if you have a bathroom ensuite, making even free-standing wardrobes susceptible.

If you can’t identify both of these issues as the source of the wetness, then other areas and reasons need to be investigated to determine the cause. These can include:

  • Leakage problems: If gutters and downpipes aren't regularly cleaned or cleared out they can clog and start to leak, causing damp in your walls.
  • Issues in the roof: If you feel like the wetness originates from any point near the ceiling, it’s advisable to check your roof. Make sure that it is compact, watertight and free of any holes to guarantee that the rainwater is draining off smoothly.
  • Plumbing issues: Loose or broken pipework could cause water to leak through the opening and seep into the area.
  • General humidity or ventilation issues: Some residential areas are more humid than others depending on climate and other external factors. So, if you live in tropical conditions, we suggest you invest in a good-quality dehumidifier or air conditioner that will enhance airflow and ventilation.

What you need to do before you start drilling into your walls

If you have discovered mould behind your fitted wardrobe, talking to a professional before taking any drastic measures should always be a priority. Why? Because firstly they are a high-end investment so you shouldn’t risk damaging them, and secondly, you should never compromise the structure of your home without an expert opinion.

Before making a drastic decision to drill into your walls or rip out your cabinetry, we suggest you chat to the FCI London wardrobe team or contact a ventilation specialist.

Most of the latter offer free surveys and will be able to recommend alternative ways to save the situation.

How to get rid of mould in a fitted wardrobe

If you’ve tackled the exterior problem but still have some mould in your fitted wardrobe, here’s how to tackle it:

  • Stay safe:

First and foremost, establish sufficient ventilation and wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles and a mask to avoid breathing in any mould spores.

  • Assess the damage:

Determine the severity of the mould infestation. If it has spread to the walls or covers a considerable area, we recommend you call in professionals to conduct a safe and effective cleanup.

  • Empty the contents:

Remove all clothing, shoes and accessories from the inside of your wardrobe to allow easy access to the affected area.

  • Optimise ventilation:

Keep your bedroom well-ventilated during the process to encourage fresh air circulation and stop mould spores from spreading. To do this effectively, open all your windows and doors and use an electric fan if necessary.

  • Try natural remedies:

For tiny spots of mould, use natural remedies such as vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or baking soda. Make a paste with baking soda and water and apply it directly to the affected region, or dilute vinegar or hydrogen peroxide with water and spray it on.

  • Use commercial cleaners:

For more obstinate situations, use commercial mould removal products and carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

  • Give it a light scrub:

Using a soft-bristled brush or sponge, gently scrub the mould-infested areas. Be aware that scrubbing too hard may cause harm to the wall surface or finishes of your wardrobe.

  • Dry well:

After cleaning, it is crucial to make sure the area is totally dry. If any moisture is left behind, you could risk a re-growth, so use a fan or dehumidifier if needed.

  • Avert a recurrence:

Preventive measures include addressing the underlying cause of mould formation, which may include lowering humidity levels, repairing leaks, and enhancing ventilation.

  • Seal your walls:

To inhibit future mould growth, apply an anti-mould primer or paint to the walls behind the wardrobe.

  • Maintain your wardrobe:

Inspect the area on a regular basis and respond quickly if you find any signs of mould returning.

Remember that eliminating mould is vital for both your health and the aesthetics of your room, so follow these guidelines to ensure a clean, healthy living environment.

Take long-term preventative measures

Mould is typically brought on by dampness, which can worsen or aggravate health issues, including tightness in the chest, coughing, or even asthma. Some age groups are more at risk than others but even if you’re designing an adult’s room it is never worth taking a risk, especially if you live in a wetter climate.

While mould behind fitted wardrobes is not as common as an internal infestation, it is also not unheard of. If you feel that your walls are susceptible to dampness, coat them with a moisture-resistant paint before you install any new cabinetry.

When ordering a new fitted wardrobe, speak to your joinery and design team about the inclusion of a good ventilation system. This should ensure that your space remains healthy and mould-free for years to come.
