What is the Average Width of a Walk-in Wardrobe?

What is the average width of a walk-in wardrobe

So you have decided to spoil yourself with a luxurious closet and you want to know: what is the average width of a walk-in wardrobe?

Though there are many variations when it comes to custom wardrobe designs, the standard full-size walk-in wardrobe for two people should measure at least 2 x 3m. A 3m width is the minimum if you plan on adding an island or seating area in the centre of the wardrobe.

Find out how to determine the right size wardrobe for your room as well as tips on how to keep it organised.

1. What is a walk-in wardrobe and what are its benefits?

A walk-in wardrobe is a large storage area that is primarily designed for storing clothes, shoes and accessories. As the name suggests, walk-ins have enough space to allow one to walk into them whilst browsing their contents.

A luxury walk-in wardrobe is therefore essentially a small room that consists of mounted cabinets, shelves, rails and drawers. It comes in four main style variations: single-sided, double-sided, island and a wrap-around walk-in wardrobe.

The main benefit of a walk-in is that it makes it possible to gather all your apparel in one single space, thus freeing up the rest of the fitted wardrobes in your home.

We are fanatical about luxury fitted wardrobe design.

When space allows, a modern walk-in wardrobe can be equipped with mirrors, seating, and ironing boards to make a complete dressing room. This makes getting dressed easier and more efficient.

Finally, the different storage systems -  racks, rails, drawers and shelves - allow you to correctly store your clothing as per their care needs. This prevents creasing and damage to your garments.

2. How do you determine the width of your walk-in wardrobe and what factors should you consider when measuring for it?

If you were to stand facing your closet, the width would be the distance across, the depth is back to the wall and the height is up and down from the floor. To determine how wide your wardrobe should be, you need to have a good idea of how much you need to store and whether you require additional space for furniture items such as a desk or a dressing table.

In addition, different layouts will require different widths. If you have a particular design in mind, here is a rough guide to their measurements.

  • Double-sided walk-in wardrobes require a minimum width of 1.8 to 2.6m.
  • Wrap-around L-shaped walk-in wardrobes are usually 1.5m wide, while U-shaped layouts are slightly larger at a minimum width of 2.1m.
  • The peninsula layout has a minimum width of 4m and a minimum height of 2.3m, but widths and heights of 7.3m are not uncommon in larger luxury homes.
  • Island walk-in wardrobes measure at least 4.3-5.5m wide.
  • Split single-sided layouts measure anywhere from 3m wide.

3. What are some tips for organising your clothes and accessories in your new walk-in wardrobe space effectively and efficiently?

Organising your wardrobe effectively starts with having the right storage system for your belongings. Depending on your needs, we offer you options like adding jewellery trays, trouser rods, pull-down hanging rails and tie racks, amongst a host of other bespoke features for optimal storage.

Once you have the right system, you can begin work arranging your clothing and accessories. The first step is to declutter. Recycle, donate or sell any accessories, shoes and clothes that you no longer need. With the remaining items, all of which you should make use of regularly, group like with like.

Decide on the best place to store each group, such as hanging pants on rods, folding sweaters in a bureau and shoes on racks. Storing similar items together makes it easier to find things when you need them.

Furthermore, make good use of prime real estate in your wardrobe. Use the front and middle sections to only store the items you wear regularly. The lesser worn clothes or out-of-season clothes should be packed up on the upper shelves.

Ask our wardrobe design experts and they will tell you that maximising vertical space with rods at different heights is a storage super hack. Hang long items such as dresses, coats and robes at a height of 164 cm, long skirts and jackets at 133 cm and shirts and pants at 103cm. By using different heights you can stack two short hang sections for double hanging where possible.

In Conclusion

In order to have a comfortable walk-in wardrobe for two, you will need at least six square metres of space available in your room. The right size will depend on how much apparel you want to organise and your preferred layout. This can all be daunting, but we're here to help.

Our friendly team will help you design your dream wardrobe and ensure all your clothes, shoes and accessories are neatly packed and accessible in a stylish and practical manner.
