What Is The Average Size Of A Sofa?

Many customers who visit our showroom often ask, what is the average size of a sofa?

Determining the typical size of a sofa may help you organise your living space. However, as you will soon see, it's not quite that straightforward.

When it comes to luxury sofas, it's hard to quantify an average size. Almost all of our luxury sofas can be customised not only in material and colour but also in size.

Even though we can more or less customise a sofa to fit your space, there are some general guidelines around common sofa sizes that will help you get an idea of what you need.

Standard sofa sizes

Standard sofa sizes refer to the type of sofas you'll find at furniture stores, ie non-customisable 2-seaters and 3-seaters, etc. Non-standard sofas, like in our luxury sofa collection, are custom-made and will have their own unique size.

Standard sofa sizes vary depending on where you're buying the sofa from. In general, though, you'll find that a 2-seater sofa will be around 94 cm wide by 228 cm long (about 3 feet by 8 feet).

A 3-seater sofa will be around 115 cm wide by 228 cm long (about 4 feet by 8 feet). A 4-seater sofa will be around 153 cm wide by 228 cm long (about 5 feet by 8 feet).

If you're looking for something bigger than that-perhaps a 6-seater or an 8-seater-then it's best to speak with our interior designer about what your options are. The Bravery Sofa from our Quick Ship range is perfect if you have 4-5 guests over and you want something comfy and modern. It also ships in 1-4 weeks so you can get it fast.

How to measure a sofa perfectly

If you're looking for a sofa that fits perfectly into a space that's already been furnished, it's important to measure your room before you buy anything new.

First of all, the size of your sofa is important -not just for comfort and style but also for practical reasons. You don't want it to be too big or too small for your room and getting a sofa that's too large can make it difficult to move around in your space.

Measuring for a sofa is easy if you follow these steps:

1. Measure the length and width of the sofa, starting at the back of the sofa.

2. Measure from the floor to the top of the back cushion and again along the top of the front cushion.

3. Compare these measurements with those of your room, taking into account any doorways or hallways that may block access to certain areas.

Customising your sofa - accessorizing it and optional extras

What if you want to customise how your sofa looks in your living space? Here are some tips for a cosy nook.

1. Accessorising is key. You can choose from throw pillows, blankets and light-patterned throws to add some personality to your sofa.

2. Add a table lamp for an extra pop of colour and warmth. This not only gives off ambient light but also doubles as task lighting if you want to read.

3. A coffee table adds another layer of interest to your couch without taking up too much space-plus, they're great for setting drinks on while watching TV or having friends over for a game night.

4. If you really want to make an impression, add a rug under your coffee table so that it contrasts with the flooring around it.

How to choose the perfect sofa for your space

If you're looking for a new sofa, it's important to choose one that fits your space. You want something that looks great and feels comfortable but also doesn't take up all the room in your living room, making it feel cramped.

To help you find the perfect size couch, we've put together some quick tips:

  • First, consider the dimensions of your space. Measure from wall to wall and from floor to ceiling. Measure front-to-back as well-this will let you know how much room there is for a loveseat or a sectional.
  • Next, decide what type of seating arrangement is best for your space. Do you want a single sofa? A chaise lounge? Two chairs facing each other? A love seat? A sectional? The Loop Sofa by Sancal is a love seat that is also a work of art if you want a creative twist in your home.
  • If you have kids or pets who might be climbing onto the couch often, then consider choosing one that has extra cushioning around the edges so they don't fall off easily.

Tips for keeping your sofa looking new for years to come

At FCI, we have curated a collection of contemporary sofas from some of the world's most exclusive brands from Europe and beyond.

Whether you are looking for a sleek contemporary sofa or something more traditional, our selection has something for everyone.

When it comes to keeping your sofas looking great, there are a few things you can do.

1. Sofa maintenance

First, don't forget that a great sofa needs to be taken care of like anything else in your home. Make sure you vacuum regularly and spot clean with a damp cloth if something gets spilt on it.

2. Minimise exposure to sunlight

Second, pay attention to how much light the fabric will be exposed to. If you plan on keeping your sofa in direct sunlight for long periods of time, consider choosing a darker colour for the upholstery. Sunlight can fade lighter colours over time, causing them to look dull and dingy.

3. Use coasters

Third, always use coasters when putting drinks down on your furniture. Whether you're using glasses or mugs, this will protect against water stains and save the wood from warping when exposed to heat for extended periods of time.

In conclusion

Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as there are currently so many different sofa designs and sizes available that it's nearly impossible to determine an average size.

However, a general rule of thumb for choosing a sofa is that you should always ensure that you have enough room to walk around your living room with all the furniture.

For the most part, most sofas measure 86cm high, 96.52cm deep, and 228cm wide. But, it really depends on whether you want to opt for a standard sofa or a bespoke luxury sofa where you can choose whatever size fits your space best.
