Remove all the contents of your wardrobes and clean every shelf and surface

The first step to getting your wardrobe looking fresh and modern is to give it a deep clean. This means removing all the contents and cleaning every shelf and surface. It may sound like a lot of work, but with these few tips, you'll have it spic and span in no time at all.

1. Start by removing all the clothes from your wardrobe. Don’t worry about folding them neatly at this stage.

2. Vacuum and dust every inch of floor space inside the wardrobe, including underneath shelves and drawers if possible (you may need to remove them for this).

3. Turn your attention to any stains or marks on the walls or doors. Try removing them with a damp cloth and soapy water. If there are still some very stubborn marks, you can try a little white vinegar. Simply spray some onto a cloth then wipe away any excess liquid until all residue is gone. NB: if you're unsure which cleaning products will work efficiently on your wardrobe, we always recommend contacting the manufacturer or the place you purchased the product from. Some materials can be harmed by certain products, so it's best to make 100% sure before you start the cleaning process.

Map out your storage system

Now that all your clothing is out of the wardrobe, you'll want to consider the most efficient way to pack everything back in. Think about what items you use most frequently and arrange these in the shelves and drawers that are most easily accessible. Place rarely used items such as extra bed linen in the hard-to-reach areas.

While you're in this process, you may as well spring clean at the same time for maximum efficiency. Create a charity pile for things that you no longer use or wear. Throw away things that can't be given away. Often the key to a modern-looking wardrobe is simply having less stuff inside it!

Consider replacing your wardrobe doors

An affordable way to refresh your floor-to-ceiling wardrobe without redoing the entire thing is to change the doors. For example, if you have hinged doors, you might want to consider a sliding door system. This instantly creates a more modern effect, especially in smaller rooms where space is at a minimum. Take some time to research the options and what will work best for your space and lifestyle. Here are some of our most popular door systems.

  • Sliding doors: these are a very popular choice for smaller spaces. They can be designed to open to the left or right and there is a variety of tracks to choose from in various price brackets.
  • Hinged doors: these are the most common type of wardrobe door. They're generally cheaper than sliding doors and can often look that way, particularly in older wardrobes that are made from lower-quality materials. If hinged doors work well in your bedroom, you may simply want to replace them with doors made from higher quality materials with better hinges, thereby giving your wardrobe an instant modern and elegant feel.
  • Bi-folding doors: also known as stack doors, these are more expensive than hinged doors, but they do create an especially contemporary aesthetic. They are a good option if your hinged doors tend to get in the way when fully open.

Wardrobe doors come in different materials such as glass and wood. Glass doors are an elegant option that allow light into your wardrobe, but they are prone to trails of fingerprints. Wood is always classy and modern, but it will need regular maintenance as it ages over time.

Add some stylish accessories to finish off the look

The final step in modernising your floor-to-ceiling wardrobe is adding accessories that will help you make the most of your storage space as well as your overall aesthetic.

We recommend starting with mirrors. They're an easy way to add light to your closet and they'll give you an instant update on how you look in that new outfit! Keep things organised by adding some hooks and rails for your clothing. If you have enough space at the bottom, consider buying some elegant storage boxes for things like winter boots which you only use at certain times of the year.
