TL;DR: Choosing an outdoor furniture table sounds like a simple task - perhaps just look at a few on Pinterest or in brochures if you're old school and you'll find the perfect piece. But it's never as simple as that, especially if you want a high quality and long lasting product. In this blog, we look at some tips to help you choose the right one and we also share five of our design team's favourites - from a solid teak wood dining table built for serious alfresco dining to statement making side tables that just make outdoor relaxation easier while improving the aesthetics.

Table of Contents

If you're in or around London and planning on upgrading your garden, terrace or courtyard for a fresh new look - this blog is for you. We have shortlisted five spectacular tables that are known for their premium quality, real weather resilience and a design that complements contemporary homes. If you're someone who is ready to make a proper investment and not make any compromises - these are the pieces your project deserve.

Why the Right Outdoor Table Matters More Than You Think

I can not really count the number of clients who treat outdoor furniture as an afterthought - something to just manage once the indoor furniture is sorted. While in my opinion, you can not maintain indoor harmony without connecting it to the outdoor furniture. One of my favourite projects that demonstrates this perfectly was the project pictured below, where our general manager, Benjamin Ibanez, in collaboration with Rina Vastu created this stunning vacation home in a blue theme - from the outdoors to the indoors - everything was connected in a grey-blue colour pallette.

The result was a considered place - one look and you can tell that someone took care of every little detail.

So this project is a stark reminder that just like an indoor living room - the outdoor space too needs a focal point. And the trouble with most outdoor furniture is that while it might be weather resistant - it is not designed to look good while doing it. Plastic resin weave, weak aluminium structures and cloudy glass tops are all markers of such poor decision making. On the other hand, true luxury outdoor furniture is designed to hold its shape, colour and presence easily for 2 to 3 decades - even in London's unpredictable rains and scorching July.

And this is exactly where the importance of premium materials comes in - high quality teak wood, marine grade aluminium and sintered stone are just a few of the many weather-treated materials that our brands work with. Properly engineered rattan and wicker too can work amazingly but not the average variety you get at most stores.

Key Takeaway: An outdoor furniture table should not be an afterthought - it's the anchor piece of the outdoor space. Material choice matters as much in the outdoors as it does anywhere else in the home.

Our Top Picks

Below we take a quick look at five tables - all very different in terms of design and utlity but all are products that I can always rely on for my clients. And of course they are all customisable to a great extent so even if I source them for 10 different projects, they can all end up looking very different.

1. Legna Outdoor Table by Skyline Design

Legna outdoor furniture table by Skyline Design with all-weather rattan detailing

If you need a wood table but also want it to have a modern look, the Legna outdoor table by Skyline Design is the one I will recommend. It is available in three different and genuinely useful sizes - from a six seater at 160 cm to an eight seater at 240 and finally a ten seater at 320 cm. If you choose smaller chairs, you can even fit twelve with the widest version.

One of the things I like about Legna is that it catches your eye without trying to hard - its not an attention seeking table but it looks stunning in any setting. For clients who love hosting outdoors, I recommend this one without any hesitation.

Key Takeaway: Available in three different sizes - the Legna ranges from a six seater to a ten seater while maintaining the same height and width.

2. Lodge Outdoor Coffee Table by Atmosphera

Lodge round outdoor coffee table by Atmosphera with solid teak base and stone top

The Lodge Outdoor Coffee Table by Atmosphera is a solid teak table but with more of a sculptural feel to it. The base plays the main character while the top brings the elegance - customisable in glass, gres or lava stone. The table is 96cm in diameter and 38.5cm in height - so it's what we could classify as a low coffee table which pairs perfectly with all types of outdoor sofas and other seating arrangements. The best part is that it is part of a complete collection by Atmosphera - including a matching side table, armchair, sofa and lounger. And if you're not too fond of round tables, this design is also available in a rectangular version.

One of my favourite ways to style this table in outdoor settings is by keeping it slightly off center and adding in 1-2 poufs as it makes the space feel more relaxed and of course photographs beautifully.

Key Takeaway: This is a round, low outdoor furniture table built for lounging zones - the solid teak base and stone top combination brings genuine material contrast to a seating arrangement.

3. Blow Low Outdoor Side Table by Gloster

Blow low outdoor side table by Gloster with sculptural rounded silhouette

We've already looked at a dining table and a coffee table - but I feel that in outdoor settings, side tables are what complete the atmosphere. Gloster is a brand that has maintained an international reputation when it comes to outdoor teak furniture but with the Blow Low Outdoor Side Tables - it has proven that it can do something different at an equally amazing level. The soft and rounded silhouette is almost pebble like and this makes it very flexible and easy to use - I have used it along side sun loungers, by a modular sofa and even beside a fire pit seating area.

In fact, if you have been considering an outdoor furniture table with a fire pit as the centrepiece of your patio or garden, then the Blow would be the perfect companion because of its understated style.

Key Takeaway: A sculptural, low-profile side table that complements rather than competes - ideal alongside loungers, sofas, or a fire pit seating arrangement.

Link low outdoor table by Varaschin, available as an extendable design with HPL top

Designed by Alain Gilles, the Link Low Outdoor Table by Varaschin has a very interesting structure as it feels massive and minimalistic at the same time - something you can not say about most outdoor pieces. It's available with a powder coated metal frame or solid teak legs with an HPL top in many different finishes - cement being my current favourite as it adapts to contemporary, traditional and even industrial themed gardens. But what makes this table very popular among my clients is that it is also available as an outdoor furniture extendable table.

Extending tables have been trending and in demand for indoor spaces since quite some time now but we have recently seen the same expectation from outdoor furniture too because when your entertaining numbers fluctuate - extendable tables just make life much easier and convenient. If you're someone who wants to be able to host big parties outdoors occasionally without comitting to a permanent oversized table, this is the one to go for.

Key Takeaway: A genuinely versatile outdoor furniture table - choose the fixed version for a defined footprint, or the extendable variant when your guest numbers vary through the season.

5. Nettuno Outdoor Table by Smania

Nettuno teak outdoor table by Smania with polished steel detailing

The Nettuno Outdoor Table by Smania is, in my opinion, one of the most versatile outdoor furniture teak table designs available in the market. Sized at 120cm wide, 120cm deep and 75cm tall - this is a high table designed for proper entertaining. Smania itself describes this table for dinners meant under the moonlight and ever since I sourced it for a Surrey client's pool terrace, I can not agree more.

Key Takeaway: A teak and polished steel high table built for evening entertaining - the metal detailing gives it crossover appeal between classic and contemporary garden settings.

How to Choose the Right Outdoor Table for Your Space

Before deciding on any outdoor furniture table, I usually ask my clients a few questions: how often do you see yourself using the table? How often do you entertain? What's the primary function of this table?

It also helps me to see the spot they have chosen for the table as scale matters a lot. The other questions help me estimate the table size the client would need because a table for 12 that's only going to be used by four to five people will just feel wrong in the long run. So clients need to be honest about their real expectations and gathering sizes - we can then scale up slightly but never dramatically. These questions also help me decide whether a dining table or a coffee table and side table combination would be more useful because with the versatility in coffee tables, many outdoor spaces are going for a relaxed seating area rather than a proper dining area.

Key Takeaway: Size for your real entertaining habits, match the table type to its actual function, and let your garden's exposure - not just aesthetics - guide your material choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need to cover a teak outdoor table over winter?
Not strictly, no. Teak itself is naturally weather resistant and ages very gracefully if left untreated - but when you go for high quality teak furniture - it's water resistant qualities are enhanced by further treatments, allowing it to maintain its original look for several years.

Q. What's the difference between HPL and sintered stone tabletops?
HPL (high-pressure laminate) table topes are lighter and more affordable, they are also available in a range of finishes. On the other hand, sintered stone is heavier in weight but it is scratch and heat proof so it has a more permanent feel to it and naturally this increases the price point.

Q. Can an outdoor furniture table with a fire pit be used on a covered terrace?
Yes modern fire pit tables are designed for all type of spaces and can be covered when not in use but you should check with the manufacturer for clear guidelines as these vary slightly from brand to brand and sometimes even from product to product within the same brand.

Q. How far in advance should I order a bespoke outdoor table?
At FCI London, we work with European manufacturers so every product is made to order and shipper direct from the factories in Europe. So there are many factors that can impact the delivery time - such as the brand you choose, the level of customisation you opt for and even the time of the year when you order as many of these factories are closed in August for Summer break. So if you want your table to be with you by Summer, we generally recommend ordering in Spring or at least 8-10 weeks in advance.

Conclusion

A good outdoor furniture table should easily outlast at least two garden redesigns and several changes of taste - that's the standard I hold these five tables to.
