Is it Hard to Build Fitted Wardrobes?

Is it hard to build fitted wardrobes?

Interior design projects vary in their difficulty, and when it comes to storage planning and custom joinery, a common question we're asked is, is it hard to build fitted wardrobes?

Without the right equipment and know-how, building durable and visually appealing fitted furniture can be challenging. Fortunately, with over 35 years of experience under our belts, we have mastered the art of designing, building and fitting premium wardrobes.

Our cutting-edge technology makes delivering seamless built-in cupboards simple and quick.

1. What are fitted wardrobes and what are they used for?

A fitted wardrobe is a custom-built piece of cabinetry that fits seamlessly in your space. They are permanent fixtures that not only look great but also add value to your home.

We are able to offer our customers a myriad of designs that allow them to store every accessory. The interiors can feature pull-down rails, jewellery drawers, extra hanging space, shelving, shoe racks and laundry bins.

We are fanatical about luxury fitted wardrobe design.

2. The benefits of having fitted wardrobes in your home

The most remarkable benefit of fitted wardrobes is that they give you extra storage by optimising the space available in your home. Designed to fit perfectly in a room, built-in cabinets won't leave wasted gaps at the sides like freestanding wardrobes.

Furthermore, built-in cabinets are customisable. At FCI we are fanatical about luxury fitted wardrobe design so we offer our clients over 200 customisation options!

Lastly, installing fitted wardrobes adds value to your home; homes with built-in furniture tend to fetch a higher price than those without.

3. How to measure your bedroom for fitted wardrobes

The first measurement you need is the height of your room, from floor to ceiling. Measure this height in three different places - the right side, the centre and the left side. You will use the lowest figure to ensure your wardrobe fits.

Secondly, measure the length of your space at three different heights. Again, you are to use the smallest of the three measurements. Be sure to do this above the skirting boards.

Finally, measure the depth that you would like your fitted wardrobe to be. By this, we mean the external depth, including the back panel and doors. We recommend a minimum depth of 620 mm if you would like hanging rails.

4. Types of materials that can be used for fitted wardrobes

The most common materials used for wardrobes other than hardwood are plywood and MDF.

There are multiple ways to finish these off for a modern look including using lacquers, leathers, veneers and wood finishes. Depending on your home's style, you can opt for gloss, matt, mirror, fabric or wallpaper exteriors.

Seeing the different designs in person helps you better visualise how they'll fit into your home. Our showroom allows you to interact with various materials and also chat with wardrobe experts about your needs.

5. How to design your own fitted wardrobe

Designing your fitted wardrobe should be fun! Start off by deciding on your size and style. Explore our luxury fitted wardrobe designs for some ideas. We have a portfolio of walk-in closets, corner wardrobes, floor-to-ceiling designs and many more!

The next step is to choose your wardrobe’s doors; we have over 100 door styles to inspire you so take your time. You can include mirrored sections or mix different colours to make a statement.

An important final step is to choose your interior storage system. Our designers recommend a combination of shelves, racks and rails in order to accommodate all clothing types.

6. Installation tips for fitted wardrobes

Preparing your home for your wardrobe installation makes the entire process run smoothly and efficiently.

We recommend removing movable valuables from the room where the fitting will take place and covering furniture for dust prevention.

In the event that you are remodelling existing cupboards, it is best to empty them out and temporarily store your clothes elsewhere. The fitting should be completed in a day so you will soon be able to return everything to its place.

In Conclusion

Inexperienced carpenters can find it hard to produce neatly aligned, contemporary wardrobes. However, for professional companies, building fitted wardrobes is an easy task. At FCI, we take advantage of cutting-edge technology to build one-of-a-kind premium wardrobes in a range of colours, finishes and styles.
