How Wide are Fitted Wardrobes?

How Wide are Fitted Wardrobes

There is no one answer to the question, how wide are fitted wardrobes? If you’re looking to refurbish your home by adding storage space, you’ll notice that the interior of all shop-bought wardrobes is usually predetermined, with little room for customisation in terms of size and finish. So to maximise your options, it’s best to go in search of a contemporary fitted wardrobe with either sliding or hinged doors according to your needs.

At FCI London, we make it possible for you to design something that will exactly meet your height and width specifications according to your available space. This means that all fitted wardrobes are essentially as wide as you need them to be, making them an ideal choice if you’re embarking on a new renovation project.

1. What are fitted wardrobes and what are they used for?

Running out of storage space in your bedroom is a common problem. Wardrobes are often overflowing with clothing and accessories and the issue is made worse by the limitations of freestanding cupboards which often leave awkward gaps that serve no purpose.

Adding built-in wardrobes to your home is an excellent solution. They are available in a myriad of sizes and finishes to fit all types of rooms and statistically save up to three times more space. Even if your room is an odd shape, a fitted wardrobe will accommodate the entire height and width of the area, providing a practical option for all of your belongings.

It's important to note that fitted wardrobes are not portable, so if you move house you can’t take them with you. However, as future buyers are always on the lookout for good storage options, the cost spent will be recuperated in your asking price should you ever decide to sell your home.

We are fanatical about luxury fitted wardrobe design.

2. How wide should fitted wardrobes be to best suit your needs?

The internal organization of any wardrobe involves a combination of shelves, drawers, and hanging closets to accommodate various items of clothing and accessories. Drawing up a proper design detailing your desired measurements will give you enough storage space to keep your home clutter-free. It is therefore imperative to make a list of your expectations before placing an order for a fitted wardrobe, enabling you to gauge the width that best suits your needs.

According to our custom wardrobe experts, the average depth of a hinged wardrobe is 24 inches. If your room is very small, you can decrease this to 22 inches, but keep in mind that it will be insufficient for hanging rails. A full-height wardrobe can be created by utilising the space from floor to ceiling or alternatively should equal the level of your door lintels, which is typically 84 inches. Take note that if each cupboard door panel is wider than 24 inches, the weight on the hinges will be too great and they will eventually collapse.

A sliding-door wardrobe should have a depth of 26 inches, including a running track of about 2 inches for smooth movement. Plan for a minimum length of 7 feet to facilitate two 3,5 foot door panels. This will allow you to access one opening at a time in order to get to your belongings. We advise that the width of each panel should not exceed 4 feet, or they will not slide easily.

3. Are fitted wardrobes available in different widths, and which one is right for you?

Because fitted wardrobes are made to accommodate your exact space, there are no set widths, heights or interior arrangements. Simply decide where you want to put it, measure your space, list the customisation options you’re interested in and let our professional wardrobe team take care of the rest.

If you’re not sure whether your plans make sense, have a chat with us. With over 35 years of experience in building bespoke fitted wardrobes, we’ll be able to help you with your layouts, give you advice and make sure your vision is executed to perfection.

4. How do you measure your bedroom to ensure that you order the correct size of fitted wardrobe for your room dimension and layout?

Prior to ordering a designer wardrobe, it’s important to take some accurate measurements. First, calculate the height of the ceiling in your room from the centre and both ends to determine whether you need to make adjustments for any unevenness.

Next, make sure the floor is level. We don't advise installing a fitted wardrobe over a carpet as it may cause it to sag. You also need to check whether the allotted space has skirting boards, coving or anything else that protrudes.

If so, include their dimensions as they must be accommodated to provide a flush, custom finish. Lastly, note down the width and note any electrical plugs that need to be moved before installation.

If you are doing any of this yourself it may seem daunting and frightening. Not to worry as we have a team of professional installers who can do it all for you. We are experts in this field and we'll ensure that all your wardrobe build is implemented to the highest standard, whilst providing the 'peace of mind' of completing it all to the highest standards.

5. How much will a fitted wardrobe cost, and what factors will affect the price that you pay?

For many, the cost is the main concern of a luxury custom wardrobe, so this FAQ is a crucial one. Most people believe that bespoke items will be far more expensive, however, this is not necessarily true. When it comes to a modern fitted wardrobe, there are a wide variety of styles and budgets to choose from, allowing us to work with you on a design that fits within your budget.

At FCI London we supply made-to-order cabinetry to fit your specific needs. Our dynamic designers will be able to discuss your options with you and suggest sensible modifications that will help meet a particular price point. Simple changes to finishes, interiors, handles and materials used affect the overall cost, so book a consultation with us and we'll help you navigate each aspect.

In conclusion

Fitted wardrobes are a wonderful choice if you need some extra storage for your home. All dimensions including the width will be determined by the size of your space, so measure up today and let’s get the ball rolling.
