How to Arrange a Modular Sofa In a Small Room

How to Arrange a Modular Sofa In a Small Room

If your living room is pressed for space, these tips on how to arrange a modular sofa in a small room will be invaluable.

Modular sofas are some of our most popular products. They can fit into just about any room or space due to their great adaptability.

Modular sofas consist of two or more sections that are attached to one another, yet can be separated. They can be configured in multiple variations, evolving to meet your needs as they change over time. This makes them particularly useful in small rooms.

Our expert guide will tell you everything you need to know about arranging your modular sofa.

Decide on the layout of your modular sofa

The first step to fitting your modular sofa into your small living room is figuring out which layout will best suit your space. Divide the sections into two or three pieces and play around with the configurations.

You can try placing one piece on one side of the room and another parallel to it on the other side. This creates a cozy seating configuration that can be more functional than the standard L-shape, especially if you're pressed for space.

Place the sofa against a wall or in the centre of the room

A key aspect of arranging your modular sofa is deciding whether to place it against the wall or in the centre of your room. With small living rooms, we recommend placing at least one section against the wall.

Pushing your sofa into the far corner of your room and positioning it in front of the TV or fireplace is the most obvious arrangement in a small space. This allows you to maximise your space for seating without obstructing traffic flow into and out of the room.

Another option is to position your modular sofa directly across from a window to give you a view of your garden, or the surrounding city if you live in an apartment. The focus on natural light will give the impression of extra space. The caveat, of course, is whether or not you get direct sunshine through the window, as you don't want to sit on the sofa with the sun in your eyes.

Another popular way to position your modular sofa is in the middle of your small living room where it can be used as a room divider. This is especially effective in open-plan homes where the long side of the sofa can split the space between your living room and the kitchen, making two rooms out of one.

Arrange the modules according to your needs and preferences

The way that you place the individual sections of your sofa depends on your needs and how you want to use your space.

If you often use your living for social gatherings, a setup that promotes conversation might be the best option for you. Configure your modular sofa around a contemporary coffee table to create a hub for chats over drinks.

If your living room is a more functional space that is primarily used for watching TV or relaxing, you can position your modular sections around a clear focal point to create an atmosphere. Styling your space in a way that draws the eye to hanging planters or a statement artwork adds ambiance to the room. Finish it off with some warm accent lighting and you're good to go.

The key is to not clutter your small space; instead, let the modular sofa be the highlight and add minimal decor items to ensure a clean look.

Add accessories and decor to complete the look

When it comes to accessorising your small living room and styling your modular sofa, less is more. If you want throw pillows, use no more than one or two. As cheerful as they may seem, too many will make your space feel claustrophobic and your sofa appear cluttered.

To make your living room appear larger, pick decor in light colours that complement the colour scheme of your sofa. If the room doesn't get much natural light, try placing a mirror over the sofa to give the impression of extra space.

If you like changing up your home decor and accessories around the holidays, minimal additions will allow you easily swap things out to fit with the season. For instance, you can use orange and yellow cushion covers for your throw pillows in autumn and red and green ones for Christmas. You can also drape a festive, themed blanket over a corner of the sofa and swap it from one holiday to the next.

Experiment with different layouts to find what works best for you

While you might think that having a small room is restrictive, you can make your dream layout work with careful design, some creative thinking, and a well-chosen modular sofa.
