Cabinetmaker Thorvald Rasmussen founded Skovby in 1933. He created a foundation for functional and sustainable furniture design based on his vision, professional pride and strenuous effort. The small one-man workshop started out with special assignments. But it wasn't long before projects advanced to complete dining room suites. Before Skovby marked its 20 years in the business, its furniture was already produced in product lines. This resulted in an international dealership network. Skovby furniture is all about function. The company is all about growing organically with commitment to its employees and environment.

Today, the Danish family business is run by grandsons Preben and Jorgen, who still carry out what their grandfather created. They continue to focus on craftsmanship, and the use of a sustainable business model and natural materials as part of their corporate responsibility.

They also maintained Skovby’s reputation as a frontrunner of furniture pieces that combine design and functionality. The company’s success, after all, is hugely in part of its ability to develop pieces that are innovative in function and strong in their aesthetic expression.

Skovby is now an international company that uses high-technology. Still, it maintains a positive imprint on the environment.

Skovby Expertise

What sets Skovby apart is its design that is 100% Danish. It is easily recognised with its well-thought-out profile, timeless design and international appeal. Most of their furniture products have clean lines with simplicity written all over it. But take a closer look and functionality becomes more evident. The company uses their experience in furniture production that spans 80 years to build products that are worth investing in. They then combine experience with strong and solid opinion on raw materials, design and the manufacturing process. Most importantly, every furniture piece is made in Denmark, making it consistently Danish. The company strongly believes that producing pieces within the same physical space, using working methods that support craftsmanship, they can achieve cohesion and consistency. It also allows them to maintain a sustainable business model.

Skovby Products

Functionality is a key element in Skovby furniture, and it is more than evident on the collection designed by M. Arch. Per Haansbaek, the architect and designer of “dining room functionality”. His long line of dining room furniture includes the rectangular #24 table that seats 6 people, and then extends to accommodate up to 20 people. This piece showcases his love for equal parts design, functionality and materials.

When it comes to innovation, look no further than the round #32 table. It extends in 3 different directions to accommodate 9 people. Included in his collection are chairs, cabinets, display cabinets, sideboards, and MODO, a flexible modular system for the living room and dining room. Skovby’s huge collection of chairs, on the other hand, is inspired by the wide variety of wood and covers. This enabled the company to develop items with local and international appeal, and with designs that are classical with soft curves and also clean and contemporary. With Danish seating well-known for its great comfort, taking a seat would be a welcomed retreat.
