A luxury home is defined by thoughtful design elements that combine to form an overall aesthetic. For tying elements together large statement rugs often serve as an anchor for living spaces, uniting furniture arrangements and merging them into a design. One of the best parts of a luxurious home is that it can be created in your style, reflecting who you are and your success. We have found that spaces with bold elements such as luxury rugs are key aspects to creating opulent spaces, and with good reason.
Large rugs make quite a statement providing they have been uniquely designed and skillfully manufactured. However, homeowners often find it difficult to strike a balance between boldness and elegance, as such large pieces of decor can transform the whole character of a room and set the tone for the rest of your home.
We suggest viewing luxury rugs as the foundation of style. Choose or design your new rug before you decorate the rest of the room. In other words, let the room do the work while the luxury rug stays centre stage. To get this started, review your room by looking at the space free of other elements, then, set your foundation with a statement rug.
Once you have an idea of the type of rug to be used in the space, you can slowly look at the existing features and evaluate how each piece will work in harmony with the rug. Use this as your guide whether you want to upgrade a room in your home or you are just starting a design project. It is far easier to build the rest of the room around a statement rug, than to add one after a design is complete.
Thinking about new concepts for grand interiors can be cumbersome, especially when you need to consider the size of the space you are working on. It becomes somewhat stressful when you must have extra large rugs in every room but the rooms vary in size. We have evaluated several typically sized common rooms and their dimensions, along with typically sized large rugs. Here are some recommended rug sizes according to floor size:
Size recommendations: 2,44m x 3,06m
Why it works: Large rugs work well in sizable rooms since they anchor furniture and create cohesion.
Size recommendations: 3,06m x 4,2m
Why it works: Much like large rugs, extra-large rugs are perfect for creating balance and harmony within spaces.
Size recommendations: 3,96m x 5,49m
Why it works: In addition to creating cohesion, oversized rugs create an inviting cosy feeling.
All three sizes offer something unique, which you can use to your advantage by pairing out-sized dimensions with smaller spaces to create a more comforting feel, or you could forego other floor coverings by placing a rug that fills a space entirely.
Our designers recommend using the three sizes in common spaces like the living, dining and bedrooms. Remember, placement is paramount.
For living and dining rooms, the rug should cover more than expected. In other words, the living room rug will extend underneath all furniture, including the sofa, coffee table, and chairs.
The dining room rug should extend just under the table and chairs, leaving enough space for said table or chairs to be moved comfortably.
For bedroom rugs, they can become hidden underneath your bed, but our recommendation is to ensure it extends a few centimetres from the side of the bed frame. We look at all these categories in more detail below.
Rugs are more than accessories to “spruce up” a space. An opulent rug has always been a sign of nobility, however, they were also created to provide a level of warmth to indoor spaces. They have become particularly popular in modern living rooms, thanks to these same qualities. Two popular colour options for living room rugs are cream, or grey, both of which speak of muted sophistication. Styling, though, extends beyond just colour. It is also important to consider the texture, fabric and pattern and how these tie into the overall stylistic choices of the room as a whole, and the rest of the home.
Interior designers often recommend that you adjust the layout and decor of your living room to incorporate more light, especially if natural light is limited. Natural light makes a space appear more welcoming, inviting relaxation in reflected light as opposed to projected light. In a living room with natural light, there is more flexibility in colour choice, texture and patterns. Conversely, rooms with limited natural light will require you to engineer more light before making bold rug updates.
Your bedroom is a place of solace, it is personal. It is used for resting and should be decorated in a way that is conducive to that. Thankfully, you do not have to wade through myriads of choices, as we have looked at several ideas for the perfect bedroom rug. Yes, rugs have significant “powers”. In past times, and present, the bedroom rug has been a sign of great fortune and we concur. When channelling this sophisticated power, you would do well to consider natural materials such as hemp, bamboo and jute as these materials provide warmth and even improve air quality. Can rugs get any better?
If you are an introvert, extrovert, or even an ambivert, be expressive in your bedroom. It is the one space you do not have to share with strangers, so you might consider something eclectic or bold to best reflect your personality—bold with a touch of metallic gold, or perhaps elegant and subdued. With modern luxury manufacturing, it’s possible to have an entirely bespoke rug that complements your style and gives you the feeling of luxury. The bedroom is a fine room to be expressive and personalise.
The kitchen, though primarily functional, can still benefit from the addition of a large, durable rug. A rug adds both style and comfort, creating an inviting atmosphere for family gatherings and casual meals. Even functional spaces deserve lavish finishes and well thought-out decor. When considering a kitchen rug, take time to observe the space and how it is filled. A kitchen should not be cluttered with items. You have room to experiment here. For example, if you have marble countertops, black-matte and gold fixtures with a modern yet sleek overall look, it allows you to include a textured rug. A textured rug provides a feeling of grandeur, which is perfect for a sleek and modern kitchen.
Vogue Australia’s 2023 article, on ways to make your kitchen more luxurious, made it clear that homeowners should not fear the proverbial rug but rather be smart when using the accessory. The article further states that the addition can mean the difference between cooking in a warm and cosy space and simply preparing food. Are you ready to elevate your kitchen?
Bathrooms can sometimes feel incomplete without a soft carpet to break the often stark lines found there. While smaller rugs can add comfort to a bathroom, opting for a larger, luxurious rug can create a spa-like atmosphere that elevates the room and mutes the space, providing a sense of comfort and privacy. Even a functional bathroom mat can be elevated by choosing materials like memory foam, especially in a darker shade like charcoal grey, which can convey a minimalist yet regal feeling, especially in a stark bathroom.
For a touch of nature, switch the materials and opt for something like a bamboo rug. Not only are they made from natural materials, but they have rich texture and patterns. Natural materials have been elevated to luxury status, and can be beautiful adornments in the hands of the right craftsman. Consider too, the cotton rug, or rather, textured cotton rugs. Bathrooms do need some kind of pattern and texture and what better way than with a luxurious textured cotton rug? Our interior designers recommend a white base with a geometric pattern to add depth and character to any bathroom.
The lead-up to any room should be adorned as a prelude to the greater design of a reception room, much as was the case in lavish 18th-century castles in the hands of royalty and aristocrats. Did you know, it is quite common for people to opt for more vintage rugs in their hallway?
According to our interior design team, the colours of the floor, walls and other accessories will dictate the ideal rug for every hallway. This comes as no surprise as every item must work together to deliver your expected look and feel - with your rug taking the place of the statement piece. One thing is certain, vintage is almost always the perfect choice and for several reasons.
Actual vintage rugs and newly designed vintage-looking rugs have wide appeal due to their old-world charm and typical high quality. When choosing materials, consider wool as a first choice, since it is comfortable and resilient, which is needed for high traffic areas like hallways.
