If your bedroom has become a little old and tired, then it might be time for an upgrade. And, while embarking on a complete overhaul, installing a bespoke walk-in wardrobe and building a better ensuite are all dreamy ideas, there are some far easier ways to freshen up your space – especially if you’re on a modest budget.
This year there’s a leaning towards a more holistic approach. “It’s about finding a balance between functionality and aesthetics, focussing on sustainability and creating a sense of wellness and calm”, says Benjamin Ibanez, one of FCI London’s leading interior designers.
Here are some of his hottest tips to help you make your bedroom look and feel more modern.
Platform beds are currently trending and add both elegance and visual interest to your room.
“Aside from being extremely attractive, they’re also a practical choice because they are ergonomically built to contain a mattress without the need for a separate base. This makes them versatile, compact and the ideal choice if you’re working with limited space”, Ben advises.
With a profile that is usually significantly lower than traditional beds, platforms have the contemporary edge that Ben believes most designers are after in 2022. And to top it all they come in a wide range of elegant colours and finishes that are to die for. One of her personal favourites is the New York collection by Gamma & Dandy. “It’s pure sophistication”, he says.

Chat NowBen tells his clients on a regular basis that “storage is prime real estate in any modern bedroom” and believes that even if you have a gorgeous, fitted wardrobe there’s always a need for more.
One of his favourite solutions is floating shelves. Why? Because they can be fitted seamlessly to any wall without the inclusion of unsightly brackets and are ideal for displaying decorative items like vases, sculptures or picture frames. They also make excellent bedside tables or bookshelves, eliminating the need for something bulkier.
Floating shelves come in a surprising number of materials and formats, so finding the right match for your décor is never an issue. Whether you’re a lover of traditional wood or contemporary glass, you’ll find a whole lot of inspiration at FCI London starting with this stunning Round-cut offering from Gallotti & Radice.
Natural light in a bedroom is imperative and should be taken advantage of whenever possible, so remove any heavy drapery and replace it with soft linen or some elegant Venetian blinds.
If your window is underwhelming, hanging a big, bold mirror on the main wall will make everything look and feel much lighter. “They are a terrific way to add visual space and a touch of drama to a small bedroom and will infuse larger areas with a wonderful sense of style”, Ben enthuses.
If you’re not keen on a wall-mounted version, there are some stunning free-standing mirrors available that are perfect for bedrooms, allowing you a full-length view of yourself whenever you need one. The Emperor by Longhi is a fabulous example of the size you should aim for.
Rugs are the ideal way to tie your room together, adding personality and warmth to your overall aesthetic. And there’s nothing more luxurious than climbing out of bed on a chilly morning and stepping onto a plush pile rather than a cold floor.
“They’re just so versatile and give you the opportunity to tone a room down or jazz it up depending on the rest of your décor. Another thing I love about them is that they’re easily replaceable, which means that if you want to keep ahead of the trends, you can change up your rug rather than your big investment pieces”, says Ben.
FCI London is proud to offer a fantastic range from Knot & Loop which gives you free rein to design the colour, size and pattern you want.
A scattering of pillows and cushions gives your bedroom a sense of opulence, inviting you to relax in style. According to Ben, they’re “the best way to add interest with layers and textures without going over the top”.
From tassels and patterns to a wide range of shapes and sizes, they’re an affordable way to add panache to your room.
Bringing a modern feel to any bedroom is much easier than you think and doesn’t have to cost a bomb. So if you’d like to explore your options in more detail, pop into our stunning NW10 showroom for a delicious cup of coffee and a chat and let’s get the ball rolling.
