Modular sofas are among our most popular products due to their versatility. When customers come in looking for one, their first question is a universal concern: are modular sofas expensive?
The answer is, they can be. They are generally more expensive than regular sofas because there are multiple pieces that are usually priced on a segment-by-segment basis. They are also more complex to make.
We asked FCI interior designer, Ricardo Jarjoura, to explain more about the pricing of modular sofas and what makes them great.
"Modular sofas are such a great buy," says Ricardo. "No matter what size or shape your living room is, you're guaranteed to find one that will fit just about perfectly."
Ricardo explains that modular sofas allow you to break up the pieces and use them in a range of configurations, tailoring them specifically to your space. "You can use your modular sofa as one couch or a sofa with a couple of separate seats. You can even separate them into two different rooms and create multiple seating areas."
Their versatility makes them especially great for smaller homes or rooms with awkward corners and narrow doorways.
As for where you can buy them, at FCI we have a range of luxury modular sofas, many of them by top Italian brands. They can be customised in the material, frame, finish, and colour to perfectly complement your surroundings.

Chat NowThe cost of a contemporary modular sofa depends largely on the bespoke options that you choose. They usually start at around £2,000 and can go up to £10,000. Ricardo explains what influences the price tag.
"There are usually 5 five stages of sofa manufacture: design, frame construction, upholstery, top cover, and finish. For modular sofas, the process takes place on a segment-by-segment basis instead of applying to one whole sofa. Therefore it takes more people more time to complete, pushing up the price."
Then there are the additional features to consider. Adding a removable top cover that makes cleaning easier is going to add a chunk of cost on top, as you're not adding the cover to one sofa, but essentially to 3 or 4 or 5 individual chairs. Many modular sofas these days also feature trendy add-ons like smartphone chargers or drink holders, once again increasing the cost.
"The greatest benefit of a modular sofa is its incredible versatility," says Ricardo. "You can arrange your sofa in so many different ways and you can change the configuration as your tastes change or as you update your furniture collection. The possibilities are nearly infinite."
Conversely, one of the chief cons - besides the cost - is that if the manufacturer stops making your chosen modular sofa, you won't be able to get a single-piece replacement. "If this happens, you'll have no choice but to replace the whole thing, which is an expensive exercise," Ricardo says.
When you invest in a modular sofa with a fairly hefty price tag, it follows that you'll want your modular sofa to last for as long as possible. Ricardo has 3 top tips to make this happen.
"Firstly, we recommend that you vacuum your modular sofa once a month using the brush attachment. If you stay on top of the dirt and grit that inevitably collects, the fabric of your sofa will last longer."
"The next thing we advise is that you rotate your cushions every 3 months. People tend to sit in the same spots on a sofa, so there is natural wear no matter which type of sofa you have. If you rotate your cushions, you'll eliminate the saggy spots and give your cushions a longer life span."
"Finally, we suggest that you wipe down your modular sofa once a week to keep the fabric looking clean and fresh."
We have a beautiful range of modular sofas to choose from, but among them are some firm favourites within our team. We asked Ricardo for his top 3 picks.
"You can't go wrong with a Gamma & Dandy sofa. They are known for their premium leather sofas and their modular sofas are no exception. The Aston sofa is one of my favourites. It features a hand-tufted, chesterfield-style frame and slender legs that are a mark of elegance. The Wave sofa is another exceptional option. It brings the feeling of the ocean into your living room with its gorgeous curved design. My third pick is the Argo sofa by Porada for its beautiful canaletta walnut frame and brushed brass feet. Plus the cover is removable for an added bonus."
