Interior Design Trends for 2022

What does interior design involve?

Interior design is the ability to create beautiful interiors and exteriors that encompass function and form using furniture, light, colour, textures, materials, accessories and art. To become a virtuoso in this field, you need an array of skills that cover conceptual development, fine-tuned planning, construction, research and communication. Oh, and did we mention the aptitude to imagine perfection? And that’s why we love it – it’s just up our street!

Top interior design trends of 2022

Now encompassing work, wellness, school, entertainment and more, our home spaces in 2022 have reshaped themselves into central hubs of inclusive living. And with it has emerged an urgent need to generate a sense of positivity and “good vibrations.” Why? Because research confirms that our homes have a definite impact on our general well-being. So how you construct your personal environment will influence your moods, mental health and ability to feel at ease. Think comfort, warmth and welcoming – everything that constitutes a meaningful hug.

In keeping with this sentiment,  this year's key focus follows on from 2021: all things natural with a renewed interest in the outdoors. Beautifully landscaped gardens, refined patios and elegant pergolas are definitely in, so start getting ready for summer sooner! There is also a strong leaning towards organic materials and eco-sustainability is an absolute must.

The interior design colour palette of 2022

Earthy tones are on the rise with chocolate browns, tans, rosy terracottas and caramels all strong contenders. Influenced by the “natural” drive, emerald-green is big this year and navy has been replaced with cobalt blue. While this new 2022 colour palette seems hauntingly similar to the hues of the 1970s, pairings no longer take the form of orange shag carpets. Instead, they lean towards rich, elegant neutrals like white and cream which will be combined in a variety of formats. Be on the lookout for fabric patterns, rugs, paint and accessories – anything that will infuse a splash of earthy brightness to your rooms.

Outdoor spaces

Fresh air is the order of the day with a huge emphasis on open spaces. And don’t think that it’s all about summer – winter gardens are also on trend. This year designers are focussed on creating sophisticated oases where you can breathe, entertain and relax in your own backyard. With patio furniture leaning towards sustainability, durability and unquestionable style, choose marble, rattan, rope and recyclables and stay ahead of your game. Our advice: get scrolling through the FCI London outdoor furniture selection today – whatever the weather, it’s never too early to plan your exterior.

Dual-purpose living areas, home gyms and wellness spaces

While these phenomena were established at the beginning of 2020 when the first lockdown ensued, it’s a continuing trend. Kitchen tables have doubled up as boardroom spaces, dining rooms are homework areas and spare rooms house an office desk. But this year it’s all about refining these changes and making sure that they seamlessly integrate into your chosen lifestyle, like a permanent home office in place of working from your dining table. Now’s the time to embrace dual-purpose living areas as permanent fixtures and make them super-classy! Incorporating health and work is definitely a top priority with meditation nooks, home gyms, spas and indoor sports zones topping the list. It’s all about finding a balance, creating some peace and allowing yourself time to escape in the privacy of your own home.

Biophilic design

2022 sees a continuation of the strong urge to embrace nature in design. Forging a connection with all life forms is a top priority, as seen in these 2 trends.

Harmonious themes

From natural lighting to organic furniture shapes and lots of indoor greenery, it’s all about harmony. The idea is to create living environments that promote health, productivity and well-being. Indulge in floral or plant themes with big, bold patterns and you’ll be hitting the nail on the head.

Eco-friendliness is a growing concern and has become an ever-important aspect of modern design. Aside from using natural materials like leather, salvaged wood and recycled plastics, sustainability has a lot to do with custom design and supporting artisanal craftsmen. Handmade by humans is the new big deal.

Art trends in 2022

No well-put-together home is complete without art, and in 2022 abstract, modern and contemporary art is taking a bow. Sculpture, photography, paintings and drawings are all in, so keep your eyes peeled for some extraordinary additions to your current collections.

Japandi, a fusion of Japanese minimalism and modern Scandinavian styles, is officially the hottest design trend of 2022. It’s all about creating a classic, timeless, simplistic look using natural materials and neutral colour palettes. The result: a functional yet humble ode to nature and art through the thoughtful use of restraint. If you’re not into it, then Dark Academia and Grand Millennial styles are also in vogue.
