6 Most Popular Types of Beds According to Interior Designers

What are the different types of beds and which one will be best for your space? Learn from our experts who have years of experience in designing luxury bedrooms.

1 - Most Common Bed Size: King Beds

According to our senior designer, Cristina Chirila, king-size beds are the most commonly bought ones at our showroom, mainly because of their generous size. “To get a good night’s sleep, you need ample space, especially if you’re sleeping with your partner. I believe this is the reason most couples at the showroom look for king-size beds.”

The standard size for a king-size bed is 76 by 80 inches which makes them a good choice for larger bedrooms.

2 - Upholstered Beds

Upholstered beds are the second most popular type of beds at FCI London because of their contemporary look and the additional comfort that they offer through the headboard.

These beds can be of different sizes including queen size, king size and single beds, but they are characterised by the leather or fabric covering their structure.

Another great thing about these beds is that they can be customised; clients can choose from hundreds of styles and colours to create a unique, bespoke bed for their homes.

3 - Single Beds

Suitable for both adult and children’s bedrooms, single beds usually come with a mattress size of 38 by 75 inches, though the size of the bed itself may vary.

Upholstered single beds are a popular choice for smaller bedrooms these days.

4 - Sofa Beds

Sofa beds, sometimes also referred to as day beds, are a popular choice for extra seating in the living room, the guest room or smaller bedrooms as they can be used as a sofa during the day and converted into a bed at night with just a few simple movements.

They’re not just practical and versatile but also space-saving and come in many different styles.

5 - Round Beds

SoRound beds bring a touch of grandeur to large, luxury bedrooms.

There are two types of round beds: ones that require a round mattress, like the Jazz night bed by Gamma & Dandy, while the other type features a round bed frame which can be fitted with a regular-sized mattress, like the Zero double bed by Presotto.

In addition to feeling more playful on a circular mattress, you also feel considerably more liberated from the restrictions of a rectangle mattress. A round bed mattress is mostly used for aesthetic purposes and makes for interesting furniture and interior décor possibilities.

6 - Four Poster Beds

Four-poster beds, as evident from the name, have distinctive posts rising up from each corner. They're most suitable for spacious bedrooms with high ceilings where one wants to create a truly dreamy ambiance.

While many consider them to be a vintage type of bed, these days you can easily find such beds in modern and contemporary designs. Below we've shared pictures of two of our favourite four-poster beds:

Things to Consider when Buying a New Bed

If you’re in the market for a new bed and can’t decide which type of bed will be best for you, consider the following factors:

  • The number of people who will be using the bed: Anyone who has to share a bed with someone else should consider a king-size mattress. However, if you won't be sharing a bed with a partner, animal, or child, you might want to think about a smaller size, such a twin XL, full bed, or queen.
  • Sleeping style: If you’re the only one who will be using the bed, consider your sleeping style and how much space you need. Taller people for instance usually want more room for sleeping.
  • The size of your room: If your bedroom is relatively small or has a low ceiling then a big bed can seem overwhelming. Storage beds, upholstered beds with headboards and solid wood beds are just a few examples of bed frames that take up more space or add greater visual weight. Consider purchasing a thin metal frame, rail frame, or low-profile wood slat frame for your queen mattress if you have space restrictions.
  • Style of your bedroom: If you’re going for a modern bedroom, then a solid wood bed won’t be a good fit for your room. So any bed that you choose must blend well with the overall vibe of the bedroom.

Final Thoughts

A bed frame can deeply impact how the room looks and how well you sleep, so don't make a hasty purchase. Also take note of the crucial distinction between a low-rise bed frame's modern appeal and a tall bed frame's more conventional aesthetics.
